August: (Free) Fallin' Through Old Memories
Free Fallin' Through Old Memories
(Fallin')
(Life Is A Wonder)
Song #100 !!!!
Not exactly sure what the title is yet.
Well, this is it! Song #100 in my personal challenge to write 100 songs. Alas, this song was heavily influenced by John Mayer's version of Free Fallin' and I hope it's not TOO similar......
Right now, I can't go back and listen to JM's version cause I've got to get my song cemented in my brain so that I can hear that it's different. Of course, if it sounds too similar, then I'll have to change the melody line. But then again, will JM ever hear why song? Highly unlikely, so I'll just leave it. It can be sung with or without the word "free" in the chorus.
I was listening to JM's version of Free Fallin' and liked the guitar sound. As I was listening I was writing down whatever was flowing into my brain, with the theme being something about turning 60, getting old, aging, whatever. I wrote a bunch of stuff, then sat down to work it into lyrics. More words came to me, with hints of Urdu poetry (life is a dream), Joni Mitchell (circle game), wisdom on aging from the novel I was reading, called "Great Village", some Hindu philosophy (just passing through), plus random associated thoughts of my own.
Then I looked up a tutorial for how to play the JM guitar part, but it was way too hard for me. I modified and simplified the part and came up with my own little groove, though same basic chord progression. Hmmmm, you can't copyright chord progressions!
This song is still really fresh, and will probably change as I keep working on it, and singing it through.
This song is for guitar, CAPO 2, so it's in E major with D chord shapes.
Free Fallin' Through Old Memories
Life is a wonder, 'n life is a dream
Looking back over, what does it mean?
Just passing through on this river of time
Rapids and calm, with no clear design.
(Free) Fallin' through old memories
'N all of the seasons I have seen
Fallin' through so many years
Memories of laughter, 'n all the tears.
Stories are lived, 'n stories are told
Years keep on flowing, so brave and bold
All drifting by me, what a great show
Leading me on where I have to go.
(Free) Fallin' through old memories
And all of the seasons I have seen
Fallin' through so many years
Remembering laughter, 'n all the tears.
Times seems forever, 'n time starts to fade
Years in full colour, then shades of grey
The current is strong, it runs endlessly
Keeps moving on, then sets me free.
(Free) Fallin' through old memories
And all of the seasons I have seen
Fallin' through so many years
Memories of laughter, 'n all the tears.
Years go round, slowing down
Staying home, saying no
Circle game, always change
Look behind, slow unwind
Find what's true, see it through
What will be, wait and see.
What will be, wait and see.
(Free) Fallin' through old memories
And all of the seasons I have seen
Fallin' through so many years
Memories of laughter, 'n all the tears.
